hail to the thief

...as a long-standing radiohead fan, i feel a need to do some promotion for this album. for me, at least, it is probably the most underrated - i've long treated it as a second-class citizen, and it deserves better.

my mainstream music listening habits are more-or-less non-existent, at this point. i might turn on the edge for a few minutes a week, max. with that in mind, i didn't even hear about this album being released - just randomly happened to spot it at a store, one day. never having been disappointed with a radiohead album, i went ahead and bought it.

if memory serves, ``Sail to the Moon (Brush the Cobwebs out of the Sky)'' was the first song that really struck me. beautiful, melodic, and original, it's hard to ask for much else from a song.

sometime after that, the songs ``Backdrifts (Honeymoon is Over)'' and ``There, There (The Boney King of Nowhere)'' really stuck with me. Both have considerably more involved beats - i'm really impressed with the level of complexity radiohead achieves interweaving rhythms and melodies. these two songs are both perfect examples.

for a long time, that was it. every time i went near the album, i ended up listening to one of those three tracks. it wasn't because i didn't like the rest of the album. in fact, i hadn't consciously heard any of it.

yesterday, i inadvertantly forgot to set repeat, on my cd player, and after Backdrifts, it continued on to track 5 - ``Go to Sleep (Little Man Being Erased)''. i haven't stopped listening to the song, since. i don't know if the studio they use was just really on, that day, or if it's always been the best in the world...but the acoustic guitar in the song is to die for. the lyrics in the song aren't among my favorite (yet, at least?) - they're fairly simple, but thom's voice makes a great accompaniment to the two lead guitars (the other being electric).

i probably haven't let my grados pause for the last 3 hours, with this song playing. it's a dangerous thing, to have so many incredible songs on one album - it becomes very hard to let go of one for another.
