the essential mix

compiling a list of useful books for cs majors is something i've been meaning to do for ages.

this is a first attempt. i'm pretty sure the only reason it's a pdf instead of plaintext is because i felt like playing with TeX. mmmm..needless markup...

if anyone has any suggestions for it, please fire them my way. would love to add to it.

I would def. add Design Patterns 0-201-63361-2. A little dry, but essential. Also, maybe anything by Scott Meyers for those C++ laddies.

This is exactly why I want other people reviewing the list. I have Design Patterns sitting right behind me, and had initially considered it for the list. I've read in a number of places that it's ``essential'', but I have yet to come anywhere near needing it in the type of work I do (but obviously I'm in something of a niche area, so that gives me a somewhat biased view). I'll add it.

As for a c++ book, I don't really have any ideas on which to add there - Paul and I searched around for ever for a definitive one, and never really managed to pick one out. Thinking in C++ was our leader, I think (partially because it was completely open, too), but the jury is kind of still out. Find one person to corroborate on Meyers and we'll use his :)
